Instead, what you should do is act fast after problems arise. How can you do this? By knowing what problems might arise and keeping an eye out for them. Here are 5 common furnace problems you may encounter in Chicago.

1. Dirty Filter

The fact of the matter is that dirt, dust, and other debris will make their way into your furnace and ventilation systems. However, a great deal of this debris will be caught by your HVAC system’s air filter, an entity that is used to keep your system operating at max capacity.

HVAC air filters need to be changed fairly frequently; usually around every 2 to 3 months. Failure to change your filter can result in an overstressed furnace.

2. Yellow Pilot Light

Look at the burning pilot light in your furnace. Is it blue? If not, there is something wrong with it. If it’s yellow, in particular, it could have something very wrong with it.

A yellow pilot light indicates an excess of carbon monoxide in your furnace. Allowing the carbon monoxide levels in your furnace to remain high can have serious consequences, and can even be fatal.

The second you notice a yellow pilot light in your furnace, we highly recommend bringing in a professional heating technician. He or she will be able to fix the problem in a safe and timely manner.

3. Thermostat Malfunction

Does your furnace shut off randomly? Does your furnace turn on randomly? Does your furnace produce inconsistent temperatures? If so, your thermostat could very well be the problem.

Thermostats that are worn down, or installed incorrectly, can drastically alter the performance of your furnace. Fortunately, you can have your thermostat repaired or replaced for a fairly low cost.

4. Belt Issues

Does your furnace make a squeaking noise every time it’s turned on? If so, you’re likely dealing with a broken or deteriorated blower belt. This belt is vital to the performance of your furnace, and is needed to help it produce hot air.

Typically, the more you use your furnace, the faster its blower belt is going to deteriorate. If your furnace is still fairly young, a new belt can be installed. If your furnace is getting old, it might be wise to just replace your furnace entirely.

5. On and Off Cycling

When you turn your furnace on, it’s supposed to remain on until it produces the temperature you designate for it. However, it doesn’t always work this way. Sometimes, due to various issues, furnaces will cycle on and off.

Generally, furnaces cycle due to either clogged filters, impaired airflow, or malfunctioning thermostats. If you can’t figure out the specific reason for your furnace’s cycling, it’s highly recommended that you bring in a professional HVAC technician. He or she will pinpoint the source of the problem and make any necessary repairs to your system.
